What they eat: Towhees eat many foods: seeds, fruits, insects, spiders, millipedes, centipedes, and snails, as well as soft leaf and flower buds in spring. At platform and ground feeders, they prefer peanut hearts, millet, wheat, and milo.
Where they live: Eastern Towhees are characteristic birds of forest edges, overgrown fields and woodlands, and scrubby backyards or thickets. They are found in the eastern half of the continental U.S.
Did you know? These birds seem to prefer to be solitary, defending territories many times larger than needed to simply provide food.
How they sound: The classic Eastern Towhee song, given by males, is a loud drink-your-tea!, lasting about 1 second. The most common call is a two-parted tow-hee! |
