What they eat: Purple Finches eat mainly seeds of coniferous trees and elms, tulip poplars, maples, and others. They visit tube, hopper, and platform feeders, looking for black oil sunflower seeds or millet.
Where they live: These birds prefer cool evergreen forests in the summer and open fields in the winter. They are found in the eastern half of the U.S. and southeast Canada.
Did you know? The Purple Finch uses its big beak and tongue to crush seeds, to get at nectar without eating an entire flower, and to reach seeds buried inside fruit.
How they sound: The song of the Purple Finch sounds like a slurred warbling and their typical call note is a short, low tek. |
