Dear Liz,
In just 11 days, you’ll have the opportunity to follow the Cornell Lab of Ornithology's top birding team, the Sapsuckers, as they attempt to find 500 bird species and raise funds for bird conservation in just 24 hours on BIG DAY 2018.
If you haven’t done so already, I invite you to take a look at our BIG DAY webpage—which includes exciting updates from our team, photos and video, and even a downloadable BIG DAY crossword for your enjoyment!
Extreme Birding for an Extremely Good Cause
This year, Team Sapsucker is heading to California, Colombia, and Honduras—areas along the Pacific Flyway—a critical migratory path for shorebirds.
Shorebirds do so much more than charm us as they skitter along the shoreline hunting for tiny shellfish. They travel the world from top to bottom in some of the most impressive migrations of any animal on earth, and their habitats play critical roles in stabilizing and buffering our human-populated shorelines.
Several North American shorebird populations are declining at a rapid rate, however. In fact, since 1973, more than 20 native species of shorebirds have collectively declined by 70%.
That is an unprecedented rate of decline, but it’s not too late to help protect these vital birds.
Will you help Team Sapsucker raise funds for these imperiled birds by pledging $0.15 for every species that the team finds on the Big Day?
If our team finds 500 species, your pledge of $0.15 means $75 for the birds!
After BIG DAY, we'll share with you the results of Team Sapsucker's efforts and ask you to fulfill your pledged gift.
Every bird counts. Every pledge matters.
With gratitude,
Jessica Cassidy Director of Membership and Annual Giving Cornell Lab of Ornithology
P.S. Make a gift of $0.20 per species ($100 or more) today and we’ll send you an elegant coffee mug featuring the Black-bellied Plover. For $1.00 per species ($500 or more), we’ll also send you an official Cornell Lab hat! Pledge now >>
