What they eat: Dark-eyed Juncos are primarily seed-eaters, and at feeders they seem to prefer millet over sunflower seeds. These birds visit mostly platform and ground feeders.
Where they live: These birds prefer to live in forests, but they can also be found in woodlands, parks, and gardens. Juncos occur across the continent, from northern Alaska to northern Mexico.
Did you know? Juncos are the "snowbirds" of the middle latitudes. Over most of the eastern United States, they appear as winter sets in and then retreat northward each spring.
How they sound: Juncos have a high, short chip note that they often give in rapid succession when they fly and more slowly as they forage. |
