what_they_eat What they eat: Downy Woodpeckers eat mainly insects, including beetle larvae that live inside wood or tree bark. They will eat a variety of seeds, though, and tend to visit suet cage, hopper, and platform feeders.
how_they_sound Where they live: Woodpeckers prefer to live in forests, but they can also be found in woodlots, residential areas, and city parks. They occur coast to coast, from Alaska through parts of Canada to southern Florida.
where_they_live Did you know? The Downy Woodpecker eats food that larger woodpeckers cannot reach, such as insects in the stems of weeds.
did_you_know How they sound: Downy Woodpeckers give off a high-pitched piknote followed by a descending whinny call. Although they don’t sing songs, they drum loudly against pieces of wood or metal to achieve the same effect.
